Nangle&Niesen
Wholesale Tree Nursery Cork

At Nangle and Niesen we offer Box Head Trees and Pleached Trees expertly growing and training them to fit our client’s requirements.

Box head trees have a single stem with the crown trained on a frame and clipped to create a box/cubed head. Box head trees will provide structure and framework within a garden design and can be used as a specimen and are a great feature whether on their own or as part of a line or avenue.

Evergreen varieties will provide year-round screening while the bare branches of deciduous varieties provide interesting structure in the garden. A key feature is the ability to optimize screening while minimizing width taken up in the garden which is ideal where space is at a premium

Feel free to browse through our stock, we are always happy to talk about our trees. Visits to the nursery are welcome by appointment and are a great way to experience our trees for yourself.

  • "Acer campestre Elsrijk Pleached is a cultivar of the Field Maple and is named after the park in Amstelveen, Holland where it was discovered in the 1950s. It differs from the species in that it has a more regular, oval habit. Pleched. At Maturity one could mistake it for straight forward Acer campestre but one with a lovely compact shape. Acer campestre Elsrijk does best in rich, well drained soils, but does well in virtually any soil type, and will readily tolerate drought, soil compaction and air pollution. A medium sized tree which we particularly recommend for urban and street planting, its foliage turns a magnificent clear yellow in autumn."
  • "Acer platanoides Globosum was introduced in the 1870s. This lollipop tree is top grafted onto a platanoides stem to form a dense mop headed tree. A very good choice as a street tree and for urban plantings. It does well on most soil types, tolerates air pollution and resists drought. The dense rounded formality of the crown makes this a delight for architects seeking contrast. Wonderful when in full foliage, it is best for an urban environment where small is beautiful."
  • "Juglans regia (Persian/English/Common Walnut) is a large, deciduous tree that makes a very good choice for parkland settings. It can produce an abundance of nuts over a long period but not guaranteed in the unpredictable Irish climate. The Juglans regia trunk is relatively short, has a smooth bark, and a broad, spreading crown. With substantial shade, the walnut also produces a substance in its proximity that can inhibit growth in other plants so is preferable as a standalone specimen. Walnut trees grow best in rich loamy, deep soil with full sun and a southerly or westerly aspect.
  • "Liquidambar styraciflua Fame Forever is a smaller form of Sweet Gum. It is a deciduous tree that has a somewhat narrower leaf and comes with stunning dark reddish purple autumn colour. Like other Liquidambars, its autumn colour is superb, its leaf (5-10cm in size with 5 lobes similar to a maple leaf) graduating from a bright green to a lovely dark-reddish hue in the autumn. Thrives on most well drained, loamy soils, but stay clear of heavily alkaline soils. Prefers a full sun aspect and a location that is not too exposed. This tree grows to about 5 meters in height with a breadth of about 2-3 metres and is relatively hardy. Would make for a great specimen tree in a smaller garden"
  • "Liquidambar styraciflua Gumball is a mop headed tree that retains its dwarfing round shape. Autumn colour is great, graduating to a deep claret in some years and the crop of 2015/16 retained this display thought the winter which was rather a surprise to us. Thriving on most well drained soils, stay clear of heavily alkaline soils. Often supplied as a half standard, this great autumn colour tree can be accommodated in most sized gardens."
  • "Liquidambar styraciflua Jason is a hard-to-find cultivar of the Sweet Gum tree. This tree would be larger than many Sweet Gum varieties but still has all the standard traits of a Liquidambar - deciduous, conical shaped with maple-leaf like foliage and a stunning dark reddish purple autumn colour. Its autumn colour is superb, its leaf (5-10cm in size with 5 lobes similar to a maple leaf) graduates from a bright green to a lovely dark-reddish hue in the autumn. In its early growth, stems have a distinctive 'cork' type bark. Thrives on most well drained, loamy soils, stay clear of heavily alkaline/chalky soils. Prefers a full sun aspect and a location that is not too exposed. This tree can grow up to about 25 meters in height and would make for a beautiful specimen tree"
  • "Liquidambar styraciflua Slender Silhouette is a tall, thin variant of Sweet Gum - perfect for tight spaces and/or small gardens. It is a deciduous, broadly conical specimen tree, with dense, alternate, maple-like leaves and comes with stunning yellow to reddish-purple autumn colour. Like other Liquidambars, its autumn colour is superb, its leaf (5 lobes similar to a maple leaf) graduating from a bright green to a lovely reddish-purple hue in the autumn. Its bark develops deep furrows as the tree matures. Thrives on most well drained, loamy soils, but stay clear of heavily alkaline/chalky soils. Prefers a full sun aspect and a location that is not too exposed. This tree grows fairly quickly to about 15 meters in height but more importantly has a breadth of only about 1.5 metres giving its 'slender' attribute, and is relatively hardy."
  • "Prunus laurocerasus Legend (Cherry Laurel 'Legend') is a vigorous, large, spreading evergreen shrub with handsome, glossy dark green leaves. In Spring copper coloured shoots are proceeded by fragrant white flowers in erect clusters to 12cm in length. In summer cherry-like glossy red fruits soon turning black form. Its leaves are particularly large and thick, slightly curved, with a lovely shiny, green hue. The growth is fast, bushy and upright. Frost hardy, disease tolerant, prefers a sunny to semi-shady location and sheltered from the wind when initially planted but once developed tolerate windy conditions.  Will grow quickly to a height of 3 metres cm and a width of around a metre. Due to the firm, leathery leaf, the tree is very wind resistant and can also tolerate sea wind. Suitable for use in parks and gardens, solitary or in groups, and work well in containers or confined spaces too. Needs protection against cold, drying wind."
  • "Prunus laurocerasus 'Novita' looks grand with its large, glossy foliage that stays put all year round. The glorious evergreen leaves are supplemented by scented white flowers that appear in spring. Later on, inedible, dark fruits appear. This is a particularly hardy evergreen laurel which makes a good hedging or screening plant, although the mature options we offer make a majestic specimen tree. Prunus laurocerasus 'Novita' is a vigorous tree, happiest in full sun or partial shade, but it can tolerate shade. Ideal for most soils except chalky."
  • "Grows from a shrub into a small to medium-size tree with a very dense branching and round crown to around 15 m but usually no more than about 10 m tall. The young twigs are conspicuously purple coloured which contrasts nicely with the dark green glossy leaf. The leaves are smaller and distinctly narrower than the species. This is the only way it differs from P. lusitanica. Thanks to the firm, leathery leaf, the tree is very wind resistant and can also tolerate sea wind. In 1893 it was described as a natural form (forma) of P. lusitanica. Suitable for use in parks and gardens, solitary or in groups. Needs protection against cold, drying wind."
  • "Prunus lusitanica 'Brenelia' is a is an elegant, evergreen, recent variety of Portuguese laurel with its appearance and use being very similar to the Angustifolia variety but has larger leaves with undulated margins. It grows moderately and very dense into a regular, pyramidal shrub. It can reach a height of between 3 and 6 metres tall. The young stems are a conspicuous dark-burgundy colour, contrasting nicely with the dark green glossy leaf. The blossom comprises of numerous clusters of white, sweetly scented flowers in late May and early June. proceeded by black berry fruit. It loves full sun but will thrive almost anywhere but it should be noted doesn't like extreme cold where leaf damage is possible. Prefers moist soil but can tolerates periods of summer drought.  The soil is preferably acidic, well-drained, and rich in organic matter. Thanks to the firm, leathery leaf, the tree is very wind resistant and can also tolerate sea wind. Ideal for any garden size and, like a lot of laurels, is ideal for hedging and screening."
  • "Taxus baccata, also known as Common Yew, is a versatile evergreen native tree that is often grown as a hedge or for topiary shaping. It grows at a relatively slow pace to an eventual medium to large size, it has a distinct red bark and grows in a bushy, thick, spreading form. Incredibly long lived, it is often associated with churchyard planting and rejuvenates itself remarkably well if pruned hard in the early spring. It is worth noting that every part of Yew is poisonous, apart from the red flesh of the berry female plants produce, to humans and animals. It is a common misconception that the entire berry is poisonous however, that said, we would still not advise you to eat them! Like most evergreens it is not tolerant of waterlogged soils and thrives best on free draining lighter land."
  • "Taxus baccata Dovastonii Aurea is an upright, slow-growing conifer with attractive, pale orange or 'golden', evergreen foliage with yellow flower and a broad weeping, light, open crown. Like other Yew, it has a fairly narrow width and columnar shape, making it ideal to use as sentries outside front doors and along pathways or to punctuate a border. This striking conifer has a yellow flower that's prominent in early Spring, set off against the smooth, reddish-brown bark. It is easy to maintain and stray stems can be trimmed back to maintain the symmetrical appearance. The foliage is highly toxic so take care around animals. It can reach a height and spread of 4 to 5 meters in 20 years, and will grow well in any situation, preferring non-acidic soil, and should flourish in dry or moist, well drained ground."
  • Taxus baccata Fastigiata is a fastigiate or upright, slow-growing conifer with attractive, yellow tinted, evergreen foliage. Taxus baccata fastigiata has a fairly narrow width and columnar shape, making it ideal to use as sentries outside front doors and along pathways or to punctuate a border. This striking conifer is easy to maintain and stray stems can be trimmed back to maintain the symmetrical appearance. The foliage is highly toxic so take care around animals. Irish Yew is expected to reach a height and spread of 5 x 4 meters in 20 years, and will grow well in any situation, tolerating all soils, other than damp, badly drained conditions.
  • "Tilia platyphyllos is a fast growing tree which reaches significant heights and widths at maturity. It has luscious foliage which gives the tree a healthy appearance all year round. This tree has a roughly fissured bark which, unlike other Limes, tends not to sucker too much. The leaves are circular in shape and dark green. Like many Limes this tree has a lime yellow autumn colour and tends to lose its leaves early in the autumn period."
