Our Roots Go Deep
Our journey began in 1973 when the initial 54 acres of land were purchased in Aherla, Co Cork, just 15 miles west of Cork City, and works began to clear and prepare the land.
The founding partners, Des Nangle and Matthew Niesen Snr, oversaw a concentration on the production of roses and fruit trees in the early days with a small selection of street and amenity trees. Conifers were added shortly afterwards and by the late 70’s the focus had firmly switched to the production of field grown trees.
Jumping forward, the mid 90’s brought the first real explosion in the supply of trees from the nursery, with Coolmore Stud in Co Tipperary being an important client at this time. Golf course construction was undergoing a boom in Ireland at this time, and we are proud to have supplied trees for Mount Juliet, Fota Island, West Waterford, The K Club and The Heritage to name a few. Some notable private clients at this time included U2 (Bono and The Edge), Chris De Burgh, actors Angela Lansbury and Brian Dennehy, President Mary Robinson, and not forgetting Charlie Haughey at Kinseally.
Growing towards the future
2001 was a year of major expansion with another 50 acres added to the nursery to meet increasing demand. New offices were built with further additions to the loading yards and storage sheds. By this stage the next generation had already come on board with Ronan Nangle joining full time in November 1996 and Matthew Niesen Jnr not long after in 1998. Our staff have always played a very important role in the development of the nursery with senior members Andrew Kelly joining the team in 1994 and Oliver Long in 1996, both are an integral part of the business to this day.
Ronan and Matthew took over from the original founders in 2008, with Ronan then taking sole control of the nursery in 2017. In addition to his 25 years plus experience in plantsmanship and commercial tree growing, Ronan brings with him a fresh approach and new ideas. With its’ Dutch origins, the tree nursery has always been committed to the most advanced technological production methods while also being sympathetic to the local ecology. We are happy to offer skilled advice to both our private and commercial clients on all aspects of selection, planting and managing trees.
