Castanea sativa Marsol (‘Marsol’ Sweet Chestnut)
“Castanea sativa Marsol is a hybrid variant of the European chestnut (Castanea sativa) and Japanese chestnut (Castanea crenata).
‘Marsol’ is a vigorous, disease resistant tree. It’s a versatile and fast growing, large tree which is particularly attractive in early summer when laden with its male and female catkins. It’s long, glossy leaves turn gold and bronze before falling in autumn.
As with the regular Castanea sativa, ‘Marsol’ is a splendid tree for grouping and especially outstanding planted as an avenue. It does best on reasonably dry, light soils, and is moderately lime tolerant.”
