Magnolia trees have some of the the largest flowers of all the flowering trees and present a stunning spectacle with their picturesque branches wreathed in upright goblets of pink purple or white. Among early flowering trees magnolias give an exotic almost tropical feel to gardens in our cooler climate more familiar with flowering trees like cherries with their relatively small flowers.
There are two main types of magnolia tree – those that lose their leaves in winter, flower in early spring and grow well in cooler areas, and those that are evergreen, flower all summer and grow best in places without severe winter cold.

Our range includes summer flowering species such as Magnolia sieboldii with its exceptionally beautiful anemone like pure white flowers and red stamens and the evergreen Magnolia grandiflora with its huge cream coloured flowers and glossy dark green leaves.
Magnolias thrive best in full sun or light shade, sheltered from winds. They prefer humus and nutrient rich, evenly moist and mainly open well drained soils which should be acid to neutral.
Cherry Trees
Another of our favourite early flowering trees are of course cherry trees which are valued for their aesthetic beauty and form one of the largest and most diverse genus with a huge number of ornamental trees of various habits, vigour and flower colour, shape and times.

Most species are small to moderately sized reaching heights of between 15 and 40 feet tall. Although flowering cherry trees can be planted as individual specimen trees in small gardens, rows can be planted to create flowering hedges or if planted on either side of a road or pathway, a blossoming tunnel.
At Nangle and Niesen we grow some magnificent cherry trees with a range of varieties to chose from. Examples include Prunus x yedoensis which puts on a wonderful display of almond-scented, blush-white blossom in late March and early April with fruits which are dark red, almost black.
Another favorite amongst our stock is Prunus serrula Amanogawa which is a late April and early May blossoming Japanese Cherry. Perfect as a street tree or garden tree where space is at a premium, this tightly columnar cultivar is often grown as a feathered tree to maximize the number of semi-double, shell pink flowers it produces.
Cherry trees beautify our gardens and parks with their soft clouds of flowers. All flowering cherries prefer deep, fresh, slightly acid soil and like full sunlight. They are very winter hardy and are pollution resistant.
